WHALE WATCHING NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand’s South-East coastline – just north of Christchurch – is one of a kind when it comes to whale and marine mammal encounters. A rare, unique oceanic landscape is the reason for this with a 2km underwater canyon sitting just offshore. Deep within this trench, two powerful sea currents meet; attracting an abundance of fish and nutrients. Think of this place, known as Kaikōura, as a mecca for sea creatures great and small. There are few destinations in the world that can offer such an intimate wildlife viewing experience.
Climb on board your private catamaran and head just offshore into the Pacific Ocean. Highlights include sightings of resident male sperm whales, who reside off the Kaikōura coast all year round; dusky dolphins, fur seals and a wonderful medley of marine birds including the spectacular wandering albatross.
The sightings on every Whale Watch experience vary. Giant Sperm Whales are the stars of the show and year-round residents. A typical Whale Watch voyage may encounter New Zealand Fur Seals, pods of Dusky dolphins and the endangered Wandering Albatross. You may also see migrating Humpback Whales, Pilot Whales, Blue Whales, and Southern Right Whales. Orcas and Hector’s dolphins commonly call this place home too.
Witnessing creatures this rare and impressive in their natural habitat is something you’ll never forget.
