Luxury Travel - New Zealand - Wilderness Safaris

Discover is an abundance of native and introduced wildlife, living in a timeless wilderness that is exclusively yours to explore and discover. Our Canterbury Wilderness partner – Stravon Safaris – captures the quintessential Kiwi outdoor experience superbly. Through Stravon, owned by our an Antipodean family member, we hold concessions to land on conservation lands throughout the South Island, providing our guests with alpine and fly fishing experiences that are second to none.

This unspoiled frontier lies only a stones throw from the authentic luxe accommodation, Headquarters, and is at the centre of Stravon’s angling operations in the South Island. Dark Sky is the ideal location to explore trout fishing in all its forms, from rugged white water mountain streams where rainbow trout rule to sublime spring creek upstream dry fly waters where big browns rise all day long, this is a place where alluvial freestone rivers, mountain streams, spring creeks and lake delta all come together. When the sun sets you’ll find yourself under the spell of the world’s largest Dark Sky Reserve, so, on your marks, get set and buckle in for an experience light years ahead of the rest.

Upon arrival at Christchurch you will be transferred by helicopter to Stravon, a pristine wilderness estate nestled in The Hunters Hills. En-route you will take in a birds-eye view of Aoraki/Mount Cook National Park and touch-down for an alpine lunch amongst New Zealand’s highest peaks.

You will soon become aware of Stravon’s deep connection with the Scottish Highlands as you are welcomed with Bagpipes and Haggis.  Spend the afternoon exploring New Zealand’s finest game estate, visit early Maori cave drawings or simply relax with a good book beside a remote waterfall.

Check-in to Headquarters, Stravon’s boutique lodge that sits at 3,500ft above sea level. Originally built in 1895, the hut’s pioneer flavour remains however all the mod cons of today are tastefully hidden. In-between the extensive activities on offer, indulge in gourmet meals on the estate prepared by your private chef in the High Country Kitchen.  Sample the fine whiskies at Shackleton’s, Headquarters’ house bar which tips its hat to a couple of great Rugby supporters – the British and Irish explorer Ernest Shackleton (as well as his lost whisky) and his Captain, New Zealander – Frank Worsley.
