21 Nov Luxury Accommodation: Magical Matakauri Lodge
With such utterly epic, stop-you-in-your-tracks views, you’d guess Matakauri Lodge was located in some remote wilderness. Hard to believe you’re only minutes from the buzzing heart of Queenstown…
Matakauri lodge is nestled in native forest right on the shore of beautiful Lake Wakatipu, and looks out (and up, way, way up) to the aptly-named Remarkables mountain ranges. Oh my goodness, the views. No adjectives can ever do them justice. There are no other buildings or developments in sight. There’s just you, and mother nature at her most spectacular.
Matakauri’s architect designed the lodge around the breathtaking scenery, of course. Every corner of the lodge, every indoor and outdoor space, is positioned to soak it up.
The large outdoor courtyard with its’ roaring fireplace, the gorgeous infinity pool, the expansive guest dining room, all offer uninterrupted panoramas across the lake to the snow-capped mountains.
Your accommodation is no different. No matter which of the 12 rooms you stay in, you’ll retire at night and wake in the morning to the most incredible living painting; the hues on the hills changing as the sun rises and falls in the sky. Enjoy the show from your own private terrace, or from in front of your suite’s open fireplace.
All guest rooms here at Matakauri also feature generous walk-in wardrobes and deep, oversized bathtubs. We think it’s worth noting that the lodge underwent a full refurbishment only a few years ago… there are some fabulous but dated boutique lodges about – this is not one of them. The colour palette takes its cues from nature, and the decor is intimate, textural and elegant, baring the signature of international award-winning interior designer Virginia Fisher.
As with other luxury New Zealand lodges (including sister properties Kauri Cliffs and Cape Kidnappers) Matakauri boasts an Owner’s Cottage. A freestanding 430m² residence, the Owner’s Cottage has four suites (each appointed beautifully), a private hot tub, a full sized lounge and kitchen and a grand courtyard.
It’s the ultimate upscale option if you’re vacationing with friends or family, or just because… you deserve it. Well, if it’s good enough for William and Kate…
While it would be easy to spend your holiday exploring Queenstown’s many world-class eateries (and we recommend you do!) some of the best dining to be had will happen back ‘at home’.
Matakauri’s Head Chef Jonathan Rogers produces a new menu every day, with cuisine that focuses on showcasing only the very best of in-season, local produce. The kitchen team delight in being able to tell you the provenance of every ingredient on your plate (you can practically taste your way around New Zealand without leaving Matakauri’s dining room!) and the sommelier makes heavenly matches with the finest New Zealand wines.
Matakauri Lodge is rated a 6-star lodge and is continually being honoured with awards from the likes of Condé Nast and Harper’s Bazaar. That must be, in large part, down to the staff. The team here is small, but has been cherry picked from impressive international resumes. The service is exemplary, but delivered with the down to earth charm Kiwis are known for.
The only downside to a place this magical? Somehow extracting yourself to go and explore all that Queenstown offers. And it offers a whole lot… But that’s another journal entry entirely!

We’d love to arrange a stay (and a local itinerary) for you.
