01 Nov NZ Destination Guide: Kaiteriteri
We asked our Antipodean friends to give us their tips for a New Zealand destination they know well. Our sophisticated mother of two spends her family holidays in Kaiteriteri, a beach-front enclave in the Nelson-Lakes region, in the north-west of the South Island.
This ultra-popular South Island holiday destination is renowned to have more sunlight hours than anywhere in New Zealand. Find out what she recommends for the best spots this summer…
On the edge of Motueka is a gorgeous cafe that is a favourite for family brunches. Toad Hall likes to do things “Old School” creating delicious and healthy food using only the best local produce. Housed in an 1850s school house, this is the place to come but bookings ARE essential. Antipodean recommendations are the seafood chowder and the live music gigs every Friday night in the summer months. Find out more here +
Crouched at the doorstep of the Able Tasman National Park is another local favourite; the Park Cafe has been serving up quality pizzas since 1986. All the delicious cakes and slices are made daily on-site and the coffee will give you a kick before you head off on your walk/hike. A local favourite for delicious pizzas and an authentic Tasman feel, with organic loos! Find out more here +
Right across the road in Marahau is Fat Tui, the perfect spot for takeways and reputed to have the best burgers in New Zealand. Wonderfully named “The Muss” with fresh New Zealand mussel pattie and “Ewe Beaut” with a mouthwater lamb pattie. I think the Antipodean highlight has to be the breakfast burger called “Sparrows Fart”. 323 Sandy Bay-Marahau Rd, Marahau 7197
There are so many ways to explore the Abel Tasman: kayak, walk, water taxi or helicopter, but it’s must see and do. Cream beaches and clear water set beside stunning native bush and bird song.
Kaiteriteri Mountain Bike Park is great for children and adults with all levels of experience covered, and you can hire bikes in Kaiteriteri.
Kaiteriteri beach itself is a beautiful spot and regularly voted one of the best beaches in the Antipodes. Two cafes and a small shop for any last minute needs before heading up the coast or you just need suncream and a towel to lie on, on the beach.

Rest and explore different beaches each day. Visit Hoglund Glass, glass blowing most days but best to ring and confirm. Glasses, vases, jewelry and so much more. It’s between Motueka and Richmond. The McGlashen Gallery, celebrated potter and artist lovely wee studio to visit near Brightwater. And the Mapua Wharf for the best Fish and Chips, a great Antipodean tradition.
