08 Jun Greytown – a Special New Zealand Town
A unique holiday & travel destination in New Zealand
In any country the bigger cities generally get all the attention, but especially in countries like New Zealand, you need to travel a little further. About an hour’s drive north of Wellington, I discovered the gorgeous and historic town of Greytown. This very pretty little place is known for its great food and sophisticated shopping! Allow plenty time to wander the tree-lined streets, explore the quality stores located in old colonial buildings, enjoy a delicious lunch and spend the night in one of the boutique B&Bs.
The thing to do here is walk down the tree lined streets and take your time popping in and out of the shops to find little goodies and gifts to take home with you. When I was there, I found some luxury bone handled French steak knives and forks that were such a great price, I bought two sets!
Blackwell and Sons – 101 Main Street
When I saw this shop I couldn’t believe how cool it was, and I wish there were more places like it in Singapore. I spent time in here imagining a life when there was time to bike around on such gorgeous bicycles. Take some time here and pick up a few cycling momentos for home – I am sure they’d arrange shipment to Asia of one of their beautiful bikes.
The Design Library – 115 Main Street
Check out this shop filled with modern and luxury pieces for the home. Curated by New Zealand husband and wife duo, Kirk and Shelley Saunders, they bring their architectural and design flair to the selection of each piece. It is really hard for someone like me to walk past this place…. so I didn’t. Just note, their store is open Thursdays to Monday, and they have a great online store
Designer Clothing Gallery – 93 Main Street
The team at Designer Clothing Gallery have put some thought into their clothing choices, with a great selection of New Zealand designers and some international brands. They have some jeans that are meant to make your bum look amazing! This is a fashion shoppers paradise, definitely original pieces you won’t find in Singapore so make sure you buy a few things for your travel wardrobe.
Food Forest Organics – 110 Main Street
An absolute must for people who love fresh, local produce, which is the Antipodean way. I spent a very happy hour or two sitting in the rear garden eating such delicious food and drinking healthy juices. You can eat in, stock up for your trip ahead, or grab a bite to take away. A must stop in Greytown on your New Zealand holiday.
Salut Tapas, Restaurant and Bar – 83 Main Street
Tapas from Salute come highly recommended. Note Salute opens sharp at midday, so book a later ferry or plane and take the time to linger over a huge selection of yummy tapas, have a few drinks or for those on a longer holiday visit, enjoy their highly regarded cooking school.
Schoc Chocolates – 117 Main Street
This one is for the sweet-tooths amongst you…. this luxury chocolate shop is the perfect place for an edible delights, chocolate accessories and of course for special gifts for family and friends back in Singapore! They have over 80 flavours to choose from and have opened a second location in Wellington if you need a another fix on your New Zealand holiday.
The Little Branches Cottages – Boutique Accommodation
Only a little bit out of town (and worth the travel) is Pip and Paul Shepherd’s cute luxury cottages. And as a bonus, Pip is a trained Cordon Bleu chef, so the breakfasts are delicious! The rooms are thoughtfully put together with all your holiday needs considered.
Wyett House – Luxury Lodge
A fully restored historic property set in one acre of mature gardens offering luxury Greytown accommodation, stay in this gorgeous period B&B in either in a suite in the main house or in one of the two Queen rooms in Annex.
